What is DENSTRIP™?
Abstract
The invention relates to an adhesive dissolving strip for drug delivery providing an inert water soluble pullulan, which is a natural polysaccharide adhesive DenStrip attached to the maxillary molars to deliver a therapeutic agent activated by the Parotid and other oral salivary glands. Oral cavity’s increased vasculature allows superior absorptive advantages over other modes of drug ingestion. The adhesive dissolving strip delivers therapeutic agents, such as an anti-smoking formula, a diet formula, herbs for type II diabetes, multi-purpose vitamins, sexual enhancement formula, and oral freshness formulas. DenStrip may be attached to 1-2 maxillary molars (facial surface) adjacent to the parotid salivary gland which triggers release of the composition into the oral cavity. DenStrip is flavored with peppermint, spearmint or can be fruit flavored, such as orange or cinnamon.
This is an alternative mode as a drug delivery system. Therefore, the clinician can now offer their patients prescriptions dispensed in pills, capsules, injectables and now DenStrip. This is a far more superior approach than merely a strip arbitrarily floating in the mouth. By adhering to the tooth structure, one is able to allow for a controlled release of the active ingredient within the DenStrip due to its fixed position throughout the time of dissolution and in close proximity to the parotid gland and other major salivary glands in the mouth. Further time release control is achieved through the DenStrip matrix.
